Why teach kids to code?

Teaching Kids Computer Programming

Why

Let's teach them to code

Kids have access to computers every day and they use them as consumers, rather than designers and creators.

Let’s change that and teach kids how to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively – essential skills for life in the 21st century.

Fun

What we do

Kid Coders is a fun way to learn computer programming concepts for ages 7 – 12.

You will learn how to create interactive stories, games and animations with a simple ‘drag and drop’ interface.

Introduction

Our Story

Kid Coders was founded by Bec Carmichael in 2014 to teach children how to code.

Bec holds a bachelor degree in Computer Science from The University of Newcastle and has many years experience working as an analyst programmer in the Information Technology (IT) sector.

Bec has taught hundreds of children to code in schools and preschools across Newcastle and through her Kid Coder school holiday camps. She has a passion for teaching children and understands how to teach complex concepts in a simple fun way to keep her students engaged.

Understanding why the code doesn’t work and finding different ways to code a solution involves critical thinking and problem-solving. Bec’s background in Computer Science and her industry experience allows her to provide expert insight in these areas and ensure the development of these skills in her students. This expertise differentiates Bec from the general classroom teacher.

Kid Coders offer a variety of services from classroom teaching to school holiday camps and before school classes.

I Am Eliza was conceived by Bec in 2017 to encourage more girls to participate in coding and other STEM fields.

Hear what they have to say about Us!

"Lakeside School were delighted to have Bec deliver professional learning to staff around coding in the classroom on our staff development day for term two. Bec's presentation and delivery was professional, engaging and fun for all involved, with many staff commenting that the "fog has been lifted" in regards to computer coding at school. Lakeside School highly recommends Bec for staff development!"
Sam Houston
Assistant Principal Lakeside School
"My two boys, aged 7 and 9, have attended Kid coders at MHPS on two occasions and have loved it every time. I have been concerned about the lack of computer coding being taught in Australian schools after hearing it is mandatory in the US. Kid coders has given my boys an excellent introduction to coding in a fun and educational way. Bec is absolutely amazing with children. All kids will love her attentiveness and enthusiasm!"
Louise
Parent
"Bec has worked alongside our occupational therapists to deliver coding workshops for children with additional needs. She is a whizz at modifying her workshop content to ensure that children of all levels of ability are able to engage, achieve success and have fun! Bec is very passionate and skilled at what she does, and we cannot recommend her highly enough."
